The Curse of Monkey Island

Near the end of my trip to Hainan in China this past February, we took a tour bus to Monkey Island and Sanya Li and Miao Village. The first stop on the tour was Monkey Island. You take a cable car into the monkey reserve. The reserve has approximately 2,000 macaque monkeys. A lot of them are free to run around, but they do have shows using trained monkeys. The monkeys in the shows didn’t seem very happy. The monkeys that were free were happy. Imagine that.

After Monkey Island, the tour moved to Sanya Li and Miao Village. The Village was a culture center that showed off past island traditions. I was coming down with a cold that day was beginning to feel bad at the Village. Fortunately, it was last day of playing tourist.
